Chapter 5: Mother’s Affection

Layers of snow slided down the slopes all around in a fierece blizzard knocking down trees, trailed by the cloud of snow, which headed for the depth of the valley.

“Mother!” the little girl screamed when she was engulfed in the avalanche. At this moment, a couple of white glows appeared—from the rabbits that had once attacked Sakura.

“Rabbita, I can’t see Rumi,” Lull said in telepathy, “Look for her!”

“I found her. I’m buried in the snow along with her. It’s nearly suffocating us!” Rabbita replied.

“Oh, no. Too much snow to take it away. Although it’s new snow, it’s way too much that it’s pressed as hard as steel,” the female rabbit sighed.

Rumi stayed unconscious in the snow, with the male rabbit stuck by her mouth who said, “I guess they’ll come in no time—who will kill us sooner or later.”

“Talk about irony,” Lull sighed again, “our enemy is Rumi’s relative. I wish the young girl to be here.”

“Quiet! Here they come. We gotta get outta here,” Rabbita said in telepathy, “If they figure out our identity we’ll be finished.”

Lull looked above and saw a big helocopter decending with blades’ spinning sound that caused noisy gust.

There was a glass case in the middle of a dark room, which was filled with liquid holding a naked woman inside. All of a sudden the alarm system went off. When the red light was blinking, the woman was about to open her eyes, mumbling, “Ru- mi...”

The blizzard on the mountain slide of Mt. Soen was weakening. A big helicopter was hovering, when a number of people came to the spot. Sakura and Syaoran jumps off the snow vehicle on arriving the scene, but rescue rangers in alert blocked their way, “It’s dangerous from up here.”

“How is the state?” asked Masaki excitedly.

“Mr. Amamiya, I’m sorry a man was sent by ambulance just a minute ago. That was an old hunter who lives around here,” the leader of the rescue team replied.

“Is he OK?” the old man asked again.

“He stayed in conscousness. He’s a skillful hunter, even though the bear engulfed in the avalanche together was found dead.”

The helicopter was still hovering with thunderous sound of blades, from which some rangers hang by ropes were making a search.

“How can they find her?” Tomoyo’s father said.

“They use GPS sensers,” the leader answered.

Sakura worried sick about Rumi, as she thought Rumi needs Sakura’s help. At this time, Tomoyo pointed to a spot in the middle of the snow field, “Sakura, look!”

Sakura and the others runs to the finding and saw a female rabbit lie bleeding on the snow.

“Oh, this is no good! The wound is opening. Honey, give me a first-aid kit!” Tomoyo’s father said to Sonomi.

At this moment, the female rabbit opened her eyes toward Syaoran and Sakura with a blue glare filled with powers.

In the analysis room of Advanced Communications Laboratory, the scientists conducted by Dr. Gnome were operating computers.

“The analysis was finished yet?” Dr. Gnome hastened.

“Calculation implied the effective frequency of a millionth of a second per tera bits,” an enginner replied.

“Dr. Gnome, we can’t handle it with our computers,” a scientist groaned.

“Use a data link,” Dr. Gnome shouted, “Request super computers all over the world for help!”

Meanwhile, Satoshi was talking on the intercom in the corner of the room. At the other side of the intercom was Misako, who was reporting, “It’s definitely true. The report from the mausoleum said that Mrs. Nakagawa is nearly awaken.”

“This is not so good! If she wakes up now, the efforts I’ve made so far will go down for nothing. Set her to sleep again. Quick,” Satoshi directed.

“What are you saying? She’s Rumi’s moth-” Misako couldn’t finished her words, because of the fuss of the scientists in the analysis room where Satoshi was.

“We got it!” an engineer began, “This chip is coded with repeating four groups of digits!”

“Four groups? What does it mean?” Satoshi put on a puzzled look.

“Remember you said it was a lifeboat’s chip,” Dr. Gnome grined, “Then the information should be concerned about the location.”

“Location... Oh, I know!” Satoshi gasped, “Coordinates!”

Sakura who was supposed to be on the slope on Mt. Souen found herself standing in a mysterious space. She felt as if someone stir up her brain with a finger, and saw the scenery that she had seen in her dream.

“I remember this scene... I can see bright light...” Sakura thought.

Sakura heard a woman saying, “Glad you are here, girl. You are the only one who replied to my call.” Sakura gasped and turned to look around, but she saw nothing but a bright flux of light coming down from the sky into the darkness where she stood. That is the same scenery that she had seen in her dream—except one difference that she saw a woman standing in the darkness. The woman made a curtsy to Sakura politely.

“Who... are you?”

The woman’s eyes glowed blue, which softly encircled Sakura, when she whispered, “I am Yoshiko Nakagawa, Rumi’s mother. You are Sakura Kinomoto, the mistress of the cards possessing mysterious powers, right?”

“How do you know?” Sakura gasped, as she remembered the fight against those long-ear rabbits (See the Chapter 1).

“I planned the fight. I had Ribbita attack you to investigate what strong powers you have, beacause you have some powers to sense my call,” the woman replied. She was naked still standing in front of Sakura, whose eyes were deep blue. Sakura felt tight as if her chest was pressed by some unseen forces to think about how badly Rumi had been wanting her mother to be with her; she must be feeling sick about her mother because she was such a little girl that she needs her mother by her side.

“Rumi is a poor girl. It’s so cruel!” Sakura cried, “How come you can’t see your daughter? You know you are the only one she depends on! I beg you please, meet her.”

The Illusion Card was picked up, which floated in the air.

“What are you doing?” Sakura mumbled.

“Sorry, but I need its power. I want to see everything about me,” Yoshiko replied.

Sakura nodded in agreement, when the Card was activated, showing a scene before her eyes.

A big fire ball fell across a night sky, which crashed on Mt. Soen. A hunter was observing the phenomenon.

On a night in a big city, people were crossing the street carelessly when the traffic light is red. But a woman was standing still.

“That was me,” Yoshiko explained, “I lost the way to go back to my home, and decided to live on this planet.”

There was a man acting similarly on the other side of the cross walk. He wore glasses, wandering about and holding his bag preciously.

All of a sudden, a baby’s crying was heard from a cabin in the mountain.

“Rumi was born to me and the man on the earth that I love the most.”

Sakura could see Yoshiko cuddle her lovely baby very happily. But the next minute, the baby was gone.

At this time, Kero and Syaoran came into the mysteirous space. Upset Sakura found Kerberus in his true form and Syaran beside her, when the Illusion Card was deactivated. That’s all the difference that happened in the mysteious space; none of Didouji family nor old Masaki was summoned there.

“Kero and Syaoran!” Sakura said.

“We found you motionless all of a sudden, and we worried, and we were summoned,” Kero replied.

“Sakura, is this Rumi’s...” Syaoran mumbled a question.

There was no time to explain to Syaoran. The glow from Yoshiko’s eyes began to weakening, and the space-time around them were shifting back to normal. Yoshiko’s figure was distorted, and about to vanish.

“Sakura, I shouldn’t meet Rumi,” Yoshiko said sadly, “If I tried to meet her, I would die in no time.”

“What do you mean?” Sakura asked in surprise.

“Satoshi Nakagawa and I loved deeply, and when I expected Rumi inside me, my body tried to eject her as alien substance.”

“A life that arose in a woman’s body is one independent existence,” Syoran said his interpretation, “Unfortunately, she is an external being than earth.”

“He’s right,” Yoshiko continued, “My body began to produce toxicant to kill my baby. Now I use my power to lock up the toxicant inside me from taking action. However, once I got back to consciousness, the toxicant would flow over my body only to kill me.”

Sakura understood the mother’s affection that she gave the birth of the baby between herself and the man she loved, and tried to sacrifice her own life for the sake her precious baby.

“Does her father know about it?” Kerberus asked.

“Yes... But he changed a lot,” she whispered.

The Illusion Card was activated once again, and the Vision Card shifted into action, too. They visioned the true scene that was currently happening—Rumi was buried under piles of snow.

“Rumi!” Sakura cried.

“Please help her. Save her life,” Yoshiko said in tears, “And tell him... that they won’t forgive him...”

The ending part wasn’t clearly heard. They sensed the enclosing space-time was disappearing quickly.

The big helicopter from the laboratory was hovering over Mt. Soen.

“We don’t have much time!” the captain shouted, “Oxigen in the snow is limited. There’s no other way!”

“Captain, the snow is still unstable. Reckless decision can cause a secondary disaster,” the co-pilot interrupted.

“Rumi’s life is the first and foremost. If we let her die, how can we beg her parents for excuse?!” the captain said.

At this time, there came an observation report, “Almost no error in GPS positioning. Rumi is buried at the point 267 feet from the quarters to the east, 71 feet underneath.”

“Alright, there we go. Tell the rangers on the ground to back off,” the captain licked his lips.

“Captain, don’t tell me you’re gonna...” the observation reporter widened his eyes.

“You guys, prepare for escape! We’ll make kamikaze, blowing the snow... Wh- what’s happening!”

Beacause of an intense gust of heat that arose all of a sudden, the helicopter neary lost the balance, when the captain saw a blazing tornado fiercely rose from the piles of snow. The rescue rangers and the police officers were in chaos among the blazing tornado and the gust around it. The tornado blended the powers of fire and wind that melted tremendous amount of snow and blew it away.

“Awesome. That’s so powerful,” Tomoyo was amazed at the scene before her eyes.

“Definitely,” Wei agreed, “Their magic powers, Sakura Cards, and the Gurdian Beast—their strengths are just beyond our expectation...”

Two of them managed to run to the snow vehicle.

“Sakura and Syaoran... they’re the strongest and perfect couple...” Tomoyo sang the impression. “Oh, my gosh...” she groaned at the next minute.

“What’s the matter?” Wei turned to look at her, “Let me guess, you forgot...’

“Right, I forgot to bring my camcorder... Hopeless of me!”

Even though Masaki in the snow vehicle didn’t have a way to hear the words talken between the young boy and girl, he knew that the violent blazing storm was filled with warm affection.

The Flame, the Firey, and the Storm Cards were glowing around the Cardcaptors, which went in the direction shown by the Vision Card. Kerberus flew all around breathing fire with all his might. Syaoran, too, used his power as hard as he could to summon his fire and wind magic.

“Shodow, find Rumi’s shadow. Water, get rid of the white demon that stand in the way, cooperating with the Firey!” Sakura gave a commend. Sakura’s magic circle grew brighter, which channeled the power into the Cards. Such powerful forces gradually melted the stiffly frozen snow, and finally blew it apart.

“We’re nearly there. Keep it up, Sakura,” Syaoran encouraged Sakura. Some snow blew above them, and some snow melted into the stream that encroached the avalanche deeply. Eventually, the Shadow Cards made a halt, where there was something pink.

“There she is! I found Rumi!” Syaoran shouted.

Unfortunately, they didn’t notice one thing deadly. Another white demon was about to attack them sliding downhill, which headed for the vacant spot that had suddenly appeared because of the tremendous power of heat.

At this moment, the helicopter crashed onto the slope to block the way of the new avalanche. Recklessly, it saved the Cardcaptors’ life crashing in the way of the avalanche of snow. “Hoeee!” the Cardcaptors were astounded by the reckless decision.

“What do you think your doing in the storm?” the captain shouted at the Cardcaptors when he crawled out of the helicopter. “Hmm? You found Rumi! Thank goodness!” he jumped with joy.

Anyway, Sakura didn’t remember very well about what happened later. Grawn-ups saved their lives in the risk of being engulf in an avalanche. The helicopter from the laboratory managed to escape before the avalanche could bury it. That was all reported in the news.

Touya Kinomoto and Yukito Tsukishiro rushed into the hospital restlessly.

“Sakura, you worried Granddad...” said he, but was shocked to see that his precious little sister was sleeping on the bed with her boyfriend that he never approved. Tomoyo Daidouji smiled and uncover the bedding to show they were in hand in hand.

“To look how deeply you are shocked, can you hold yourself in their wedding?” Yukito smirked playfully.

“Don’t start,” Touya turned aside.

All the staffs gathered in the analysis room of Advanced Communications Laboratory. The chip in the glass case illuminated the room with its violet glow. The analysis computer in the corner of the room was about to display the result of days of calculation on the console.

“Here’s the result of analysis,” Dr. Gnome announced.

“First, this chip was produced by a highly advanced technology. It is a specialized chip for setting the location,” a scientist reported.

“The chip is a kind of RISC chip—a specialized processor like the one built in a rice cooker,” an engineer added.

“Yeah, one of those low level chip,” Satoshi commented.

“Second,” the scientist continued, “our analysis clarified the transmission code of the chip described the relative locations of the main planetoids with respect to the solar location. Among them, we found the description of the unknown planet on the opposite side from the earth across the sun.”

Then Misako asked, “Does it have anything to do with the source of the gravitation that affected the returning Krommelt Comet?”

“Space Probe Tsubame didn’t observe the existence of a planetoid,” Satoshi replied, “however, the gigantic source of gravitation left there is considered a worm hole.”

The scientists looked at the gray haired scientist nervously. Dr. Gnome felt it would be nicer if he was not to mention what he had to talk about.

“The perturbation, or the shake of the eath’s orbit—the latest observation shows—shifts a little aside from the axis connecting the sun and the worm hole,” Dr. Gonome mentioned.

Everyone knew what topic would come next. Nakagawa felt it natural that there was hiss. He continued, “Two days later, the winter solstice, for 12 minutes from 12:30 in the morning, the sun will not block the path between us and the worm hole. In other words, the Star Gate, or the Gate to the Stellar Field will appear in the vision. Well, everyone, Advanced Communications Laboratory keeps away from the usual work for the time being in order to access the Star Gate.”

All the staffs applauded. Among the cheers, Masako couldn’t help getting excited.

The gigantic parabolic antenna on the Andes, South America, began turning—once it faced the sun in the center, the antenna followed it. The motion was synchoronized to the same antennas installed in South Africa and Japan.

Two rabbits in a basket in Rumi’s ward were angry to see the happening in the room. They saw a man cuddle Rumi, but the little girl refused in tears, “No, I don’t want to do as you tell me. Let go of me, Dad!”

“Be a good girl. It’s all for you. Come with me, Rumi,” Satoshi insisted.

“You’re liar. You are mad at me. I don’t want to go. I’m scared. Mom, help me,” she screamed.
