Cardcaptors the Movie

Summary

Winning to Hong Kong

Sakura flies on her staff as a spirit shoots an arrow which multiplies into number of arrows to attack her. Sakura avoids the attacking arrows, but when one of the arrows nearly got her Li saved her with his lightning magic. Then Sakura uses the Windy to stop the arrows, before sealing the Arrow Card. When Sakura picked up the sealed Card, Kero sang the praise that Sakura is making a great Cardcaptor. Strangely, on that night Sakura has a dream that she got pulled in water tangled around by ribbons.

On the last day of school, Sakura’s class are receiving report cards from Mr. Terada. Sakura got C’s, and Madison got straight A’s. Li is very nervous because he has to show his report card to his mother. Timidly checking his card, he heaves a sigh of relief to know he can show it to her. On the other hand, Meilin is upset because she didn’t get straight A’s.

On their way home, Sakura and Madison stop at Maggie’s store where Sakura buys a notebook. Maggie says Reedington shopping district is having a big contest and everyone who bought something can draw a lot. To their surprise, Sakura wins the Grand Prize, a trip to Hong Kong. On getting home, Aiden can’t join because he’s going away for a business trip instead, he says, but gives Sakura a green light if Tori is along together. They also decided to invite Madison and Julian to the trip.

Sakura is very excited in the airport because that’s the first time she saw an airplane in practice. Madison is videotaping her as usual. Tori lied Sakura that she can’t leave her shoes on on the plane. When a flight attendant addresses at the moment she is taking off her shoes, Sakura feels embarrassed and mad at Tori. Julian seats himself next to her as he says his thanks for the invitation.

Getting to a hotel room in Hong Kong, Kero gets amazed that the city is quite different than when he used to live there with Clow Reed. Sakura’s party take a ferry bounded for Hong Kong Island. Sakura is in a good mood to see a seagull flying along, while Madison is videotaping her. On getting the destination isaland, Kero mentioned that there’s the same old strong forces even though the city has completely changed. Sakura may have won the grand prize for a reason, Kero pointed out, just as Clow Reed used to mention that nothing is accidental.

Mysterious Birds

Sakura had the strange dream again that she stood on water in a basement. This time, she sees a sorceress floating above by the skylight. She wakes up at the moment she grabs one of the ribbons coming from the mysterious sorceress. Sakura’s party drop by a restaurant to have lunch. Julian orders so many baskets of dim sums that Sakura and Madison sweatdrop. Taking a basket she likes, Sakura finds Kero is hiding in a basket eating a dim sum as she gasps. So Tori pushes her to demand what she was hiding. She laughs nervously and managed to evade his suspicion. Skimming a guidebook, Tori suggests going to check the Bird Street after lunch.

Sakura is excited in the Bird Street, saying she’s never been to a place where there’s so many birds in one place. Hearing Julian that there’re some birds that can learn to talk, Sakura beams at the birds at one store and she talks to them. Madison videotapes her acting that way. At this time, two birds are on the wire above the street from which Sakura senses mysterious forces. At the moment Sakura looks at them, they fly off. Sakura runs after the bird impulsively. Sakura released the Jump Card to spring up 100 feet above the street to see where the birds fly to. There is a well surrounded by tall buildings. As she looks into the well, Sakura got hypnotized. Luckily, Li back in Hong Kong catches her and wakes her up, however, Sakura falls in the well and gets soaked.

Madison bumps into Meilin in search of Sakura. At this time, Sakura walks back with Li. Tori is mad at Sakura because she took off all by alone, besides, Madison mentions that Sakura needs to change to dry clothes somewhere, so Li and Meilin take Sakura and the others to Li’s house. Sakura and Tomoyo changed into cheongsams, and Tori and Julian into kun fu suits. Li’s energetic four sisters were patting Sakura and Madison first, but their interest switches to Tori and Julian. There comes Li’s mother, who knows by insight that Sakura has Clow Cards—plus senses the presence of Kero in Sakura’s bag. The mother decided to put Sakura’s party up for the night.

In the bed room, Kero ensures Sakura and Tomoyo that there’s no wonder that Li’s mother has a strong power, because the family is the direct descendant of Clow Reed. Clow Reed was the most powerful sorcerer an Asea, he says. At the midnight, Sakura had the mysterious dream, in which this time she was caught by the sorceress. Sakura wakes up in the nightmare screaming. That was not just a dream that she has a mark on the wrist as if she had been tied up. At this time, Li’s mother called her to the garden. The mother tells her that Sakura was drawn to Hong Kong by the woman in her dreams. But the dream will tell her what to do as well.

Sakura’s party including Li and Meilin leave Li’s house next morning, when Li’s mother advised Sakura to be careful about water.

Different Dimension

Li and Meilin accompany Sakura’s party. However, Meilin kind of complains about why they have to be their personal tourguide. It’s that Li’s mother told Li to follow them all along because Sakura would be in danger. Besides, Sakura is asking herself what is it that summoned her to Hong Kong, how it’s related to Clow Reed, and whether her dreams will be where she’ll find the answer. When Julian bought her a barrette Sakura remembers the woman in the dreams wore a barrette, too. A short while later, Sakura finds that the mysterious birds from the day before are above her again, and then Sakura and Li run after the birds. Disgusted, Tori follows Sakura but loses sight of her when she springs off with the Jump Card. Following the presence of the birds, Sakura comes to an antique store. No one is in the store, but she found an old book with the cover on which she sees the woman in her dreams sitting by a well. She can hear the woman calling to come inside, when Sakura gets hypnotized and tried to open the book. Kero tries to keep her hand from opening the book. No choice, when he is about to bite her hand to wake her up, unfortunately, the others run into the store. Seeing Sakura totally possessed by something, Tori jolts her to wake her up, but then Sakura opens the book with a vacent look.

Water comes out of the book, and Sakura gets back to her conciousness in a strange place—like in her dreams. There’s the sorceress in her dreams floating in the place, who has been waiting for someone but not for Sakura. She attacks Sakura questioning how Sakura got there. Strangely, when Sakura uses a Clow Card the sorceress recognizes its identity, the attack becomes even more violent as she demands why Sakura has Clow Cards. At the mement Sakura was nearly beaten by the sorceress’ water attack, Li saved Sakura with the Freeze Card. In fact, the others are trapped inside water spheres by the sorceress. Li has the Storm Card trap the sorceress in a tornado to buy time, so they can save their friends. Sakura succeeds in saving Tomoyo out of the sphere with the Sword Card. Li tries to save Meilin, but the sphere is too hard for him cut with his blade. Eventually, the sorceress gets furious and overpowers the Storm Card. Li tells Sakura to escape with Tomoyo as he gets trapped in a water sphere. The sorceress guffaws that if Clow Reed won’t set her free she’ll use their powers to escape, and that she’ll have her revenge. Kero tells Sakura to flee or otherwise she’ll be caught as well. Sakura holds her tears, and flies up with Tomoyo and Kero, until she scarcely escapes the way out.

Showdown

Sakura, Tomoyo, and Kero are back in the antique store. Sakura accuses herself that her friends were caught. Unfortunately, the book through which they went to the other dimension is gone. No matter how hard they looked for it, the book isn’t found. At this time, Kero remembers who the sorceress in the other dimension was.

Back in their hotel room, Kero tells Sakura and Madison about the sorceress. The sorceress is named Sui Yang, who bumps into Clow Reed in a street and fell in love. As they gets closer, she was taught by Clow how to use magic, but she planned to use it for the evil. Finally, he created another dimension and trapped her inside. It was what happened a long time ago, but in Kero’s opinion, Sui Yang may not even realize she’s dead. She may have tried to draw Clow Reed into the dimension to escape. That may explain why Sakura was drawn to Hong Kong, since she has Clow Cards. Kero says there are more than one entrance to the other dimension so it’s possible to save her friends without the old book. Then Sakura remembers the well drawn on the cover was the same place as she saw practically the day before. It must be another entrance to the other dimension, she exclaims.
This part is different than the Japanese version. In the Japanese version, the sourcerss (her name was never mentioned) challenges to fight Clow Reed every chance gets. According to Kero, she was a fortune-teller using water-reading, whose business was diturbed by Clow telling people's fortune by pastime. She must have created a dimension in which to hide and wait for Clow Reed to come even after her death, Kero mentioned.

After dark, Sakura, Madison, and Kero come to the old well among tall buildings that’s supposed to be the entrance. Sakura wears the purple costume made by Madison patterning on a cherry blossom. There is a strong force field of Clow Reed’s magic to seal the other dimension. Sakura doesn’t match the power of the barrier. Then comes Li’s mother, who wrenches the force field open with her full strength, so Sakura and Kero go inside the barrier. Inside the well is the tunnel to various dimensions. When Sakura thinks hard of her friends being trapped, the entrance to the destination dimension flashes.
In the Japanese version, the force field was set by the sorceress herself, but not by Clow Reed. She stayed inside the well on her own, not being trapped inside by someone else.

Sakura and Kero are in a strange place, but then the two mystrious birds show up and fly away. Sakura and Kero chase them through the Bird Street and other places, until they come to the antique store. Opening the door, it is filled with water inside. Sakura and Kero swim in the water and break the surface to see the sorceress. The sorceress demands where Clow Reed is; even though Sakura explains Clow Reed is dead she doesn’t listen. She takes in Sakura’s friends and dashes up overpowering the shield. The sorceress gasped in the night sky that the city is completely different than she knew. By the well, Madison and Li’s mother are waiting for Sakura to jump up, then there she comes out. The sorceress blasts water to attack her as Sakura dodges. But she is caught by the ribbons from the sorceress, and tied up on top of a building. The sorceress makes a tank with a force field and fills it with water to drown Sakura. Deep in water, Sakura sees the scene Clow Reed decided to trap the sorceress in the other dimension. Then she knows the barrette the sorceress is wearing is the third entrance to the other dimension. Sakura uses the Arrow Card to crack the force field, draining water down the building. Sakura walks closer to the sorceress and says with tears that Clow Reed is truly dead and she’s sorry for the sorceress to suffer, and that she wants her friends back. The sorceress has been waiting for Clow Reed to have her revenge, but she didn’t mean to hurt Sakura’s friends, Sui Yang says. Then she disppears because she realizes Clow Reed is no longer there. When she’s gone, her barrette corrodes in Sakura’s hands, and Sakura’s friends came back.
In Cardcaptors, Clow Reed cast a spell on Sui Yang's barrette to trap her into the other dimension to hold her from atempting a destructive activity. In contrast, in Japanese version, the barrette was the birthday present given by Clow Reed. The sorceress couldn't tell him her feelings even though she was in love. The challenges she made against Clow Reed were some kind of appeal of her loving feelings, anyway.

Next day, Tori and Julian mention they don’t remember a thing about the day before. Besides, Sakura sympathizes the sorceress that it’s that she just wanted her spirit to be set free. And she’s glad her friends are all right. Finally, she believes she’ll be back in Hong Kong pretty soon.
Tori and Julian are happy-go-lucky, aren't they. Losing the whole-day memory must be a horrible thing, but they didn't seem to care about it.
