Return To The Future

This episode corresponds to the Episode 27 of CCS “Sakura and the Shrine of Memory.” The title is a spoof of “Back To The Future,” the U.S. movie released in 1985.

Summary

Sakura has the strange dream again where she stands on the rooftop of a building facing the radio tower. She can see the shadow of a woman standing far in front of her. Then she gasps and wakes up. It is quite early in the morning even before her alarm clock goes off. Leaving Kero sleeping in her desk drawer, Sakura changes into her uniform and goes out for school on her rolerblade. Rolerblading, Sakura is wondering what that strange dream was trying to tell her.

When Sakura comes by in front of the shrine where she captured the Maze Card, she happens to meet Layla Mackenzie raking the gateway. Layla says that she has been helping her father in illness those days by doing the work around the shrine for a few days. Sakura offers to help her raking the shrine. Plus, Julian who just comes by riding his bike joins the two of them. In raking the garden, Sakura remembers that Li told her to be careful about Layla; but she doesn't understand what he meant. After the raking is done, Layla gives a bag of chestnuts for the sign of appreciation to each of Sakura and Julian. Although Layla tries to say something to Sakura, she rafrains thinking it isn't the time to tell her.

On arriving at her classroom, Sakura shows her friends the chestnuts given by Layla in return for the help. Li doesn't like that Sakura helped Layla because he's suspicious of her. Optimistic Meilin proudly shows her friends how to peel chestnuts.
In CCS, Syaoran didn't like that Sakura helped Kaho together with Yukito, beucase Sakura was Li's rival in romance in those days.

Back in Sakura's house, Aiden knows Layla is the new math teacher at Sakura's school by reading the school notice. He says that Layla was Tori's math teacher before she left to teach in England. Sakura is surprised since Tori and Layla acted as if didn't know each other when they met on the night she captured the Maze Card.
There's a little difference from CCS that Kaho Mizuki was a trainee teacher at Touya's school, not yet a professional teacher. One more thing, Touya and Kaho didn't even pretend they didn't know each other, though.

Later on that night, Kero was woken by the strong power of a Clow Card. Tracking the presence, Sakura and Kero comes to the shrine, where they meet Li also tracking the presence following the lasin board. Kero pinpoints the location of the source of the power, which is the sacred cherry tree. But nothing happens. Kero flies away to look for a vending machine to get some drink. Sakura and Li get up on the branch and talk together. Against Li insisting they should stay on guard about Layla, Sakura doesn't know why he doesn't like her. Giving up persuading Sakura, Li jumps off the tree to run. When Sakura tries to follow him, the Clow Card comes back at work. The card pulls her into the cherry tree; Kero witnesses the scene when he just comes back with drinks, and unfortunately Li can't do anything to help her.
In CCS, Sakura and Syaoran were talking about their romance toward Yukito when they were sitting up on the brach. Nelvana editted out that scene.

Sakura finds herself in the shrine where no one is around. Sensing someone's presence, she jumped up on the branch to hide. She sees Tori and Layla down under the tree, when she knows that she is sent back three years in the past and that Layla was Tori's teacher like Aiden said. Sakura can hear that Layla has powers to see things others can't like Tori does. Later, Sakura sees why Tori and Layla pretended they didn't know each other. Layla met mith Tori under the cherry tree a week before she had to go to England, when she told Tori not to tell Sakura about anything they talked or even that they knew each other. Surprisingly, Layla looks up at the tree and smiles as if she could see Sakura. At this moment, Sakura is sent back into the present time where Kero and Li are waiting. That is the work of the Return Card; she managed to capture the activated card, which then flies to Li's palm since he was the one who used the Time Card to rescue Sakura. From the sense of relief and exhaustion, Li collapses. Acually, Layla is watching them from behind the shrine, smiling.
There's a big difference from CCS. In CCS, Kaho was Touya's ex-girlfriend; they kept going out on date for a year until she had to go studying in England. In CC, there was no romance between the two.
This scene was editted out; in CCS, Sakura hugged Syaoran with delight to know he had saved her, and his face turned all pink before he lost conciousness.
